Pesäpallo at the 1952 Olympic Games

The Games of the XV Olympiad, Helsinki — where Pesäpallo was showcased to the world as a demonstration sport.

Pesäpallo, the Finnish variant of baseball, was played as a demonstration sport at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland — officially the Games of the XV Olympiad. Helsinki is the northernmost city to have hosted a Summer Olympic Games, and these were the first Games held in a non-Indo-European language speaking country.

The ceremonial first feed (pitch) was thrown at 18:00 on 31 July 1952 by Lauri "Tahko" Pihkala, who created the sport. The teams playing were the Finnish Baseball Federation (Pesäpalloliitto) and the Finnish Workers' Sports Federation (Työväen Urheiluliitto). In a match with a shortened schedule, the Finnish Baseball Federation won 8–4.
